Since this story basically started with Norman and Perce, it seems only fitting to end it with them. I was at the cemetery in Brooks looking at the graveside for Mom and Dad, but I also searched for Norman and Perce and could not find them anywhere. I knew their approximate location and that they were buried together, but there seemed to be no headstones left and just basically a strip of cement in a patch of grass. Phoning the City of Brooks, they said that they took the headstones out of an area so that they could mow the lawn. I think they were experimenting to see if anyone noticed the headstones missing. They promised to put back in place which they did when I inspected later, but the headstone did not have a base and so was lying flat on the ground.
The City also told me that the Chudleighs bought three plots: Norman was buried in the middle, Perce on his right, with the third one reserved for Emma on his left, the love of his life. Not getting off to the best of start with Norman at time of marriage, Emma was still very loyal to him until his very last day. Family lost track of this empty plot, and after Emma married Peter Wagner and lived with him for many a year, she ended up getting buried with Peter in Calgary! So for the sake of alleviating Pansy and Elizabeth's concerns, I was able to sell the extra plot and use the money to come up with a base for the headstone to get it looking presentable, so much better than it was.
You are welcome Perce and Norman! I know you are free and there are no stones to turn over anymore! And Grandpa, you can relax for you did good. You did take up roots on the farm which was your goal for the sake of family, and you paid what you owed so that the place was debt free. You were successfully able to 'pass the torch' to your son Rufus. Rufus took and ran with the farm, did a really good job and you would have been very proud of him. Then he got his wings... and he flew!
Special thanks to cousin Marilyn for her contribution to this log and for her research and discussion held directly with her mother, my Aunt Elizabeth.
